Helicopter Safety the Focus of Oil & Gas UK's Aviation Workshop

A one-day aviation seminar will bring together key players from the North Sea oil and gas industry and aviation interests to discuss the latest advances in UK offshore helicopter safety.

Delegates on the day will hear from Oil & Gas UK's special projects manager Jessica Burton about the achievements of the Helicopter Task Group, set up to address issues arising from the fatal crash in April 2009. The task group's successor - the Helicopter Safety Steering Group - and its future priorities will be presented by the group's co-chairs, Bill Munro, managing director of Bond Offshore Helicopters and Ken Robertson, CNNS Asset Manager, Shell U.K. Limited.

Also appearing on the day will be representatives from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to provide an insight into the way they work, including their forensic investigations, and from helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter, who will be discussing how they have responded since the 2009 accidents.

With helicopter safety the key focus of the seminar, other talks will include a presentation on coping with volcanic ash when trying to maintain an efficient offshore helicopter operations service and the latest update on the progress towards introduction of HUMS Advanced Anomaly Detection; designed to better identify in advance defects in critical airframe components that could lead to catastrophic failure.

Robert Paterson, Oil & Gas UK's health, safety and employment issues director, said:

"This workshop is the annual event where we bring together a wide range of offshore-related aviation interests to discuss and learn about a range of issues relating to helicopter safety."

This is the fifth annual Aviation Workshop organised by Oil & Gas UK, and will take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 15 September 2010 between 9am and 5pm.

One of the event's keynote speakers, Ken Robertson, said:

"Since the tragic incident in April 2009, helicopter safety has moved forward immensely with the work of the Helicopter Task Group making a significant contribution.

"This event will reflect on this work and help educate and inform the industry about the future safety developments planned through the Helicopter Safety Steering Group."

Oil & Gas UK is the leading representative organisation for the UK offshore oil and gas industry. Its members, which number over 100, are companies licensed by the Government to explore for and produce oil and gas in UK waters and those who form any part of the industry's supply chain.
