Scottish Water's £9 million Upgrade on Islay
Scottish Water has begun a £9 million upgrade to renew the tap water and wastewater infrastructure on Islay.
A total of £4.5 million will be spent in Bowmore on improvements including the installation of a new pumping station and new surface water drains. In Bowmore, 95 per cent of properties are connected to a public sewer system which does not provide the standard of treatment required by legislation.
Work is also due to start on improving the quality of drinking water with a £200,000 upgrade planned at the Torra water treatment works.
At Port Ellen, construction is underway on a new £2 million collection and transfer system as well as the public sewer systems in the smaller communities of Port Charlotte, Port Wemyss and Portnahaven being improved.
Around £3 million is to be invested in new collection and transfer systems.
