Jacobs Receives UK Government Support for Evaluation of Novel CO2 Capture Scheme
Jacobs Consultancy UK is leading a team of six companies and a UK University to evaluate a novel concept for the capture of CO2 produced in power generation.
The evaluation will be financially supported on a cost sharing basis through a Department of Trade and Industry R&D support program and will take 12 months to complete. The team will investigate several variations of gasifying coal and capturing carbon as CO2 from the syngas produced, and will develop their performance and capital costs. These data would then be the basis for gasification modules which could be applied to existing natural gas combined cycle power stations to supply carbon free fuel gas as a lower-cost alternative to imported natural gas.
Jacobs Consultancy's team consists of E.ON UK, Mitsui Babcock, Watergrid, Power Asset Modeling, Electric Power Research Institute, and the University of Nottingham.
In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Phil Stassi states, "This development will be an important contribution to UK endeavors to develop Carbon Abatement Technologies for global application. Jacobs will employ both its project management and process skills in optimizing the joint output of this prestigious team of organizations."
