Weir Westgarth Awarded Contract on Capixaba Project
Weir Westgarth Ltd, part of the Techna Division of The Weir Group PLC has been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract on the Capixaba project, which is the latest development in the Golfinho Oilfield, by Petrobras.
The award, by the IHC Gusto and SBM partnership, is for the supply of a 140,300-BPD sulphate removal process plant. The plant is designed to remove sulphates and other divalent ions from injection water to enhance oil recovery. The removal of these ions reduces the tendency of barium sulphate and strontium sulphate scale to form in the reservoir.
This is the second project of this type to be awarded to Weir Techna by SBM, and is partially attributed to the success of the FPSO Brasil project, which was completed in 2001.
The plant will be engineered in Glasgow by, Weir Westgarth. Other companies within The Weir Group will benefit from the contract through the supply of associated equipment including pumps, valves and specialist alloys and metals.
Weir Westgarth has been involved in the design and supply of sulphate removal plant since the first commercial installation of the technology in the early 1990's. This project, together with Weir Westgarth's success on the P51 project, emphasises the increasing popularity of sulphate reduction as a means to improve enhanced oil recovery techniques.
