Foster Wheeler Awarded Contract for New Chemical Facilities
Foster Wheeler Energy Limited has been awarded a project engineering services (PES) contract by Jubail Chemical Industries Company (JANA) for its epichlorohydrin and chlor-alkali project (known as Project HASSAD) to be located in the Secondary Industries Park at Al-Jubail Industrial City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Foster Wheeler's role as PES contractor covers the co-ordination of the engineering, procurement and construction phases of the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2007.
The new facilities will produce 30,000 tonnes per year (MT/Y) epichlorohydrin, 50,000 MT/Y caustic soda and 45,000 MT/Y calcium chloride. Epichlorohydrin is used in the manufacture of epoxy resins, and the new facilities are to be built adjacent to JANA's existing epoxy resin plant. The caustic soda will be used as feedstock for an existing soda plant operated by Arabian Alkali Company (SODA) in Al-Jubail, while the calcium chloride will be crystallized into granules and sold mainly in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) member states.
Both JANA and SODA are part of the Arabian Industrial Development Company (NAMA) and Project HASSAD will be realized by a new company called HASSAD Petrochemical Company, in which NAMA will also hold majority shares.
