AMEC's MOD Contract Award Creates 250 Jobs at Faslane
More than 250 jobs are to be created in Inverclyde by AMEC which has won a Ministry of Defence contract to provide a new floating jetty and infrastructure provision, in support of the new Astute class submarine for HM Naval Base Clyde, at Faslane.
The announcement was made to coincide with a visit to the Inchgreen Dry Dock Facility by David Cairns, MP for Inverclyde, and Under-Secretary of State at the Scotland Office and MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil.
AMEC Project Director, Michael Parker, said: "The contract will last for two years and we want to maximise the economic benefits for the area. There are already over 30 people engaged in enabling works at the Inchgreen Dry Dock and this figure will increase steadily over the coming months.
"We have been in touch with the local Jobcentre to discuss the use of local labour. Much of the work will be sub-contracted and we know that relevant skills exist within Inverclyde that will emphasise the desirability of recruiting locally where possible.
"This is an important UK government contract and we very much welcome the early visit by Mr Cairns and Mr McNeil to the yard."
Mr Cairns said: "I see this as a vital part of the regeneration of the Waterfront and I am cautiously optimistic. Developing the riverfront is not all about building expensive flats - it's about getting people back to work along the banks of the Clyde. This is very much part of the renewal of the whole area, and I am delighted to see work coming to the Inchgreen Dry dock after the length of time it's been empty.
Mr McNeil added: "It's great to see the dry dock working again and there are certainly some exciting opportunities for the surrounding area.
"Under the regeneration plans, the whole site has been designated for maritime industrial use. I have, therefore, been speaking to Clydeport, Scottish Enterprise and the Urban Regeneration Company about how we can make this part of Greenock the first choice location for top-class companies and the skilled jobs they bring."
