Canadian Natural Resources Limited Contract Awarded to Jacobs

Jacobs LogoJacobs Engineering Group has received a contract to provide a conceptual study for Canadian Natural Resources Limited's (CNRL) grassroots upgrader to be located in northern Alberta, Canada.

The upgrader will process bitumen produced via thermal in situ methods from up to four of Canadian Natural's oil sands leases near Cold Lake and Fort McMurray, Alberta. Jacobs will investigate various upgrader technology options and process configurations to produce a synthetic crude oil blend. Gasification is expected to be an essential component of this facility, providing energy for the thermal production facilities, as well as hydrogen and utilities for the upgrader itself.

The eight-month study supports Canadian Natural's business planning efforts, with the final technology and configuration recommendations forming the basis for second phase analysis. Jacobs will perform the work in Chicago, Ill., and Calgary, Canada, with a team of professionals experienced in upgrading and gasification technologies, processing crude oils and bitumen, and upgrading configuration studies.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Greg Landry stated, "We are pleased to be involved in Canadian Natural's upgrader development plans. Conceptual design and planning is a crucial stage of project development, and this is an excellent opportunity for Jacobs to work together with Canadian Natural to recommend optimum process technologies and plant configurations that will ensure project success. We are looking forward to bringing value to Canadian Natural through our knowledge of proven and potential upgrading and gasification technologies, as well as our deep understanding of the global crude oil market."
