Mott MacDonald Appointed Owner's Engineer of Sudan P.S.

MottMacDonald LogoMott MacDonald has been appointed as owner's engineer by the National Electricity Corporation (NEC) of Sudan for the development of Khartoum North Phase III, a 2 x 100 MW extension to the existing power station facilities. The $175 million project, located in the north suburbs of Khartoum, is being developed to provide additional power to the Khartoum region of Sudan as part of an overall plan to install an additional 5000 MW to the Sudanese national grid.

The oil fired power station extension will be integrated into the existing Phase I and Phase II power station facilities and will require some of the existing buildings and equipment to be demolished and replaced. The extension will include Sudan's first wet limestone-gypsum flue gas desulphurisation plant to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions.

Mott MacDonald's role as engineer involves overseeing the performance of the EPC contractor, China National Machinery & Equipment Import & Export Corporation, during the implementation of the project from basic design through to the supervision of site construction, commissioning, testing and warranty period services. As engineer the company will also undertake factory inspection visits to the major equipment manufacturers in China.

The first unit is due to start commercial operation at the end of 2008 with the second unit coming on-stream in spring 2009.
