AMEC and UKAEA Target South Korean Nuclear Market
AMEC Nuclear and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korean Power Engineering Company (KOPEC) to win work in the multi-billion pound South Korean nuclear market.
The companies will target work in nuclear waste management and repository projects, decommissioning, reactors services and nuclear plants in Korean and international markets. AMEC and UKAEA will also support an education exchange programme to allow KOPEC to send key staff to the UK to gain experience on decommissioning projects including working at UKAEA's Dounreay facility in Scotland.
"This is a very important strategic contract," said Alan Lamerton, Managing Director of AMEC Nuclear Holdings Ltd. "AMEC is an established company in Korea and is the first foreign firm to invest in a leading PFI project with Incheon Bridge. This and our strong links with UKAEA have given us an undoubted advantage and means that we have made progress in targeting the nuclear market in Korea where others have failed.
"KOPEC has the local experience in the market, AMEC has got some extremely good project management systems which KOPEC has been keen to plug into, and UKAEA brings the experience of working and operating in nuclear sites in the UK."
"AMEC Nuclear will bring its extensive programme management and technical expertise to the agreement while UKAEA's experience in all the technical aspects of waste management and decommissioning will ensure that the companies are in a prime position to win work in this emerging market."
Martin Wenban, Director of Sales and Marketing, UKAEA, said: "UKAEA is delighted to sign this memorandum of understanding with AMEC and KOPEC. We have set the pace in nuclear decommissioning and waste management on our sites in the UK, and last year we were given the go-ahead by government to exploit this expertise in other markets, in the UK and overseas. We are already experiencing the benefits of a strong partnership with AMEC. Working together, I look forward to supporting KOPEC in its nuclear projects in Korea and beyond."
Lim Sung-choon, president of KOPEC said he expected the agreement to allow the company to join overseas projects. "The biggest agenda for our domestic atomic energy industry is to develop overseas markets and advance high technology."
