Bristow Helicopter Ditches In North Sea

Several people were plucked from the North Sea after their Bristow helicopter crashed. The twin-engined Super Puma ditched near the Dutch port of Den Helder, however rescuers pulled everyone out of the wreckage and the water.

A British oil worker employed by Dutch oil company NAM was one of 17 people taken on board the rescue helicopter after a power failure on their platform, K15 FB1. A rescue boat transferred the 13 passengers, who were mostly Dutch, and four crew to shore. One man who was suffering from mild hypothermia was flown to a nearby naval base.

The Super Puma crashed into the sea shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, about 15 miles north-west of Den Helder, 55 miles north of Amsterdam, after reporting engine trouble.

Jack Rusthoven of the Dutch Coastguard said: "The Bristow helicopter was heading for Den Helder when it simply lost power, forcing it to make a controlled crash landing in the North Sea."
